Symptoms of thyroid nodules
Thyroid nodules can have symptoms depending on their nature. The thyroid nodules can be symptomless and may be detected incidentally.
Various symptoms can be
- A lump or swelling in the neck that you can see or feel.
- Difficulty swallowing.
- Hoarseness or other voice changes.
- Neck pressure or fullness.
- Pain in the front of the neck.
- Sudden, rapid weight loss.
- Fast or irregular pulse.
- Nervousness or anxiety.
It is important to detect the symptoms early and treat the nodules.

Causes and risk factors with diagnosis
Thyroid nodules can be seen in all age groups. They are more commonly seen. Later half of life.
Causes:
- age (especially over 60), female gender,
- Family history of thyroid issues
- prior to radiation exposures to the head or neck.
- While the exact cause of most nodules is unknown, iodine deficiency, autoimmune diseases, and even obesity can play a role.
Risk Factors for Thyroid Nodules:
Age: The risk of thyroid nodules increases with age, particularly after 60. Gender: Women are more likely to develop thyroid nodules than men.
Family History: A family history of thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer increases the risk.
Radiation Exposure: Prior radiation therapy to the head or neck, or exposure to radiation fallout, can increase the risk.
Iodine Deficiency: While uncommon in the US, iodine deficiency can lead to goiters and potentially nodules.
Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease can increase the risk of developing thyroid nodules.
Other Factors: Obesity, smoking, and potentially metabolic syndrome may also contribute to increased risk.
Iodine Overload: Excessive iodine intake can also contribute to thyroid nodule development.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis of the nodules can be easily made using imaging techniques like sonography, CT scans, and MRIs.
Furthermore, the FNAC and biopsy can help in tissue diagnosis by taking a small sample and assisting in differentiating benign from malignant nodules.
Treatment Options for Thyroid Nodules
Treatment of thyroid nodules has grown over time. Treatment depends upon the type of nodules, whether benign or malignant. Most nodules in the thyroid are generally benign.
Traditionally
Traditionally, benign nodules have been treated surgically with partial or complete removal of the thyroid. New thyroidectomy techniques focus on thyroid preservation. However, thyroidectomy is an invasive procedure with a long hospital stay, pain, and a higher risk of infection. New forms of techniques are less invasive.
Microwave ablation
Microwave ablation of the thyroid nodules is the least invasive procedure, with minimal risk and no sutures. The patient can be discharged within a day. The procedure involves a small cut, and a small electrode is inserted into the thyroid with the support of a generator. The generator supplies the energy, and ablation is done. It can be finished in a few minutes with no major anesthesia or sedation. It helps in the preservation of the normal thyroid tissue and functions.
IRfacilities is an expert group of intervention radiologists who work in this field. The team provides end-to-end care from diagnosis to treatment using microwave ablation with good post-operative care. The team has experience in a large number of cases.

Cost of Thyroid Nodule Treatment in India
The cost of thyroid nodule treatment is variable and depends on the type of treatment and the nature of expertise.
The thyroid nodule surgery is cheaper as compared to microwave ablation; however, it is associated with multiple risks and complications of anaesthesia. The cost in the Western world is much higher than in India.
Microwave ablation in India ranges from 75000 to 125000, depending on the place and city. At IRFacilities, the treatment can be taken at a lower cost with utmost care and expert hands
