What Causes Varicocele?
Varicocele occurs when veins in the scrotum become enlarged due to poor blood flow. Common causes include:
- It is caused by abnormal stasis of blood in the testicular veins.
- Veins in the testis have valves that allow only one-way flow of blood towards the heart.
- Varicocele treatment is essential to prevent long-term damage and discomfort.
- Varicocele causes low sperm production. 15% of men experience varicocele. 90% of the time, it appears on the left testicle.
- Most cases appear on the left testicle and are seen in males aged 15 to 25.

Symptoms of Varicocele
Varicocele causes mild symptoms:-
- Lump in one of your testicles
- Recurring pain in the scrotum
- Swelling of scrotum
It can cause 3 main problems:-
- Scrotal Discomfort
- Impaired Fertility
- Decreased Testosterone Production
Varicocele can present with variable symptoms. Varicocele disease can easily be diagnosed using varicocele radiology modalities like ultrasound. It can be symptomless in early disease. However, as the disease progresses, varicocele can lead to pain in the testis with prominent, physically felt veins. Pain can be persistent and dragging in nature. Other symptoms can be swelling in the testicle and the groin area. However, if the disease persists over time, it can lead to atrophy and small testicles.
Treatments for Varicocele
Surgery
Open surgery is called Varicocelectomy that removes enlarged veins. Common procedure is laparoscopic varicocelectomy where the surgeon uses several small incisions, laparoscope and camera.
Varicocele Embolisation
Varicocele embolisation is a less invasive procedure using a small catheter inserted into the groin or neck vein. A coil is then placed inside the catheter and into the varicocele. With this the blood blocks and does not flow to the abnormal veins.
BRTO and Coil Embolisation
- BRTO - Balloon-Occluded Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration, an endovascular method used to treat varicocele.
- A minimally invasive technique involving blocking of dilated vessels, reducing the risk of rupture.
Embolisation needs no stitches or even general anaesthesia and only a very tiny incision. The recovery time is only about 2 to 3 days, whereas surgical techniques require deep incision and several days to recover. It is proved that embolisation and surgery are equally effective.

Varicocele Embolisation: Before and After Results
Before Embolisation: Varicocele disease can lead to daily discomfort for the patient and can cause infertility, with interference in the daily routine. However, it is important to treat the disease.
After Embolisation: The patient can see significant improvement in symptoms after the varicocele embolisation. It helps in the reduction of the disease symptoms and helps in preventing infertility. A varicocele specialist can treat the disease with embolisation. The procedure does not require any major surgery and can help relieve the symptoms.
Varicocele Embolization Cost
Varicocele embolisation in India is significantly cheaper than in the Western world, where a left-sided embolisation alone can cost up to $20,000 (~₹16 lakhs).
The cost of varicocele embolisation in India can vary significantly based on the technique used, the operator's expertise, and the center's volume of cases. Most centers offer plain coil embolisation of proximal veins, with costs ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹3–4 lakhs, especially for bilateral cases.
At IRFacilities, we provide affordable and transparent pricing. For unilateral varicocele embolisation, the cost is fixed at ₹1.25 lakhs when the best discounted rates are available, and for bilateral cases, it is typically ₹2.5 lakhs. Discounts are often offered for bilateral cases since OT charges and operator fees remain consistent.
In comparison to varicocele embolisation, laparoscopic varicocelectomy is an invasive procedure that costs around 75,000 to 1 lakh. The varicocelectomy remains the cheapest option, varying from 30000 to 50000; it is invasive with high recurrence. Varicocele embolisation remains a minimally invasive, cost-effective alternative with significant advantages.
